"1-5 Microns EP"

Schuster is a dark ambient/industrial project from Australia that started releasing cassettes in the ’80s and has released two CDrs this year. This 5-track release is intended as a statement on biological logistics in warfare. The five tracks all share the title of the album, but have subtitles to differentiate them. However, they are all clearly meant to be variations on the same theme; they share samples, textures, and beats. Of particular note are speech samples describing a micron spreading and infecting dozens of people (“you’re going to die, there’s just no question about that”), and the endless looping of a distressed man crying something that sounds like, “Sacrilege! Why are you playing in this church?” Musically, the first track is a vibrating industrial soundscape, tracks three and four are variations on the same dark drone (three being completely instrumental and four including the speech samples), and two and five feature dubby, clanging industrial beats along with the samples. Two features the beats upfront pretty much all the way through, while five fades the beat in gradually. The repetition of all these elements may border on overuse, but I think that might be part of the message here. I can’t really tell. One of the samples states, “I’m not here to talk about the morality of this stuff, that’s up to you,” so I guess take from this release what you will. A few months after the debut-CD "Breaking Down Into His Own Oblivion" the Australian ambient Schuster project strikes back with a new opus. This side-project of Zilverhill (a highly recommended project) sounds like it is moving on where the previous album left off. The title "1 - 5 Microns" is a statement on biological logistics in warfare. It leads to an intriguing concept in sound with a strong visual appeal. The tracks rapidly lead the listener into an imaginary state of apocalypse. The ambient universe of Schuster has been built up with dark humming background sounds, spooky spoken samplings and lost of experimental collages. "I Was Only A Fucking Kid" shows an interesting progression leading into a repetitive and tiny trance-like structure. The apotheosis comes at the final part. The 4th track "Morality" sounds pretty disturbing, like the sonic symbolization of the apocalypse, but the 5th and final cut "Achieved" is for sure the absolute masterpiece. The chilling ambient sound reinforced by the spoken samplings and repetitive rhythmic are illustrating all the talent and knowledge of this artist. This is ambient music with a very own taste, being an excellent alternative to the usual and traditional dark ambient releases.DP:8)DP. Side-Line
Nach “Breaking Down Into His Own Oblivion” zu Anfang des Jahres überrascht Schuster zum Sommeranfang mit der EP “1 – 5 Microns”, die sich inhaltlich mit der biologischen Kriegsführung auseinandersetzt, welche (eigentlich) durch die Biowaffenkonvention von 1972 verboten ist, worüber sich die U.S.A. seit 2002 durch neue, aber nicht explizit verbotene, Forschungen hinwegsetzen.
Auch “1 – 5 Microns” erblickte das Licht der Welt über das kleine aber feine australische Label Adeptsound, die diese EP in einer limitierten Quantität (50 Stück) als CD-R auflegt & eine weitere Vermarktung über kostenpflichtige Downloads vornimmt, welche sich langsam aber sicher (besonders bei jüngerem Publikum) durchsetzen.
Mit der biologischen Kriegsführung greift der Australier Tim Bayes hinter Schuster einen riesigen Themenkomplex auf, der sich innerhalb von 5 Tracks maximal anreißen lässt, aber keine ausführliche Auseinandersetzung offenbart, die dieser daueraktuelle Inhalt verdient hätte, welcher in der jüngeren Geschichtsschreibung (südafrikanische Apartheidsregierung, Irak/ Iran, Golfkrieg usw.) leider immer wieder auftaucht und für Angst & Schrecken sorgt. Gerade zu dieser “Kiste” ließe sich mehr machen, als nur ein (kleines) Statement dagegen, weshalb “1 – 5 Microns” in Punkto Thematik gemischte Eindrücke hinterlässt – Schade, hier war faktisch mehr drin!
Musikalisch erlebt der geneigte Hörerkreis eine beeindruckende Melange aus Ambient, Industrial & englisch geprägter Electronica (Dub), die der Protagonist mittels verschiedenster Ton- & Sprachsamples, monotoner Drones & noisiger Minieinschübe akzentuierte. Gewisse Stücke scheinen identisch, eine Begebenheit, welche sich bei genauem Konsum verflüchtigt, aber zu Anfang totale Aufmerksamkeit garantiert. Kulturterrorismus
